Dear Firewalk Theatre, I am writing on behalf of everyone at Dulwich College who was lucky enough to experience your performance of “Frankenstein” in Spanish on Friday 13th October 2000. More than 150 of our boys who study Spanish attended, some with just six weeks experience of learning Spanish, and some who have studied Spanish for over three years and are now doing A level Spanish with a view to furthering their Hispanic studies at University next year. Dulwich boys are always a critical audience, never easily pleased, living as they do with all the thrills and spills of London on their doorstep. It was therefore quite magical to witness the reaction of the boys as they came out of the theatre:

“What a fantastic experience”

“Wow – I’ve only done Spanish for six weeks and I really understood what was going on.”

“That was the best thing I’ve ever seen” (from a boy who doesn’t even study Spanish!)

“I thought I was going to cry in the last scene – it was so powerful!”

“God, Miss, why can’t your Spanish lessons be as exciting as that!”

Even now, a number of weeks later, students from all my classes are quoting from the play and asking when the Firewalk are coming back. It appealed to students of all linguistic abilities, and was undoubtedly the most rewarding experience they have had since starting to study Spanish. The Edward Alleyn Theatre is used to having outside theatre companies visit, but I would like to point out that the theatre staff, both technical and administrative, were likewise full of praise. They were unanimous in saying that Firewalk Theatre was the most professional Theatre Company they had ever had the pleasure of working with. As a teacher of Spanish it was wonderful to see how some of my most uncommunicative and unenthusiastic students responded in such a positive way. It has made my job a lot easier, and I can’t tell you how much we are all looking forward to your return next year!

¡¡¡¡Muchísimas gracias!!!!

Jessica Hounsell, Head of Spanish, Dulwich College

Following the performance of Frankenstein last night at Cheltenham Ladies College, I am writing to congratulate you all on a superb performance. We were entertained and delighted by your interpretation. I was most impressed by your enthusiasm both on and off stage. The characters were engaging and the plot enthralling. If only there were more theatre companies bringing the Spanish language and culture to our students in such an appealing manner.

Louisa Orr, Teacher of Spanish, Cheltenham College

I thought it was quite excellent. The acting was superb, very tight and professional. The characters were well drawn and identifiable. The costumes were clever and added to the authenticity of the play, they looked good and well made. The sound was marvellous, not just the crashes and the fireworks but also the clarity of diction and the minor effects such as doors opening and stairs being climbed. The thunderclaps and mists were most effective. We all enjoyed the actors coming out into the audience, it was thrilling and a bit scary. The script was marvellously succinct and very funny. The point about tolerance of those unlike ourselves was well made. I thought it was a wonderful production.

Fiona Rusling, Birkdale School, Sheffield

I brought a group of Year 11 students to see the production in September this year and I am writing to say how much we all enjoyed the play. These students are currently preparing to take GCSE and they found the vocabulary well within their grasp. I could see that care had been taken to include vocabulary that is studied for this examination and this gave the students the confidence to continue to listen carefully. The visual and sound effects were used extremely effectively and comically to aid understanding. As one or two of the jokes were a little ‘risqué’ in their eyes - as their teachers were present – and the fact that they understood them, added to their enjoyment. The pace was fast and the action varied which made them concentrate hard to keep up. I would thoroughly recommend the production.

Pat Morton, Head of MFL, Wickersley Comprehensive School

I was very pleased to be able to host this and was delighted with the production as a whole. The students who came to watch spoke highly of the acting and had no difficulty understanding the plot. This was a most positive educational experience for them and will have contributed significantly to their enjoyment in learning Spanish.

We would very much like to thank you and your theatre group for a most enjoyable and worthwhile evening at Cheltenham’s Ladies College. We were initially quite apprehensive. We did not know if the pupils would understand anything or if they would be bored. We need not have worried because from the first moment everyone was engrossed. Although there were, inevitably, scenes which some pupils found difficult to follow, their interest was maintained throughout via humour and special effects. They were alert, interested and made a great effort in listening to the Spanish. The acting was excellent and the four of you did extremely well to play all the characters so superbly. You spoke clearly and we all recognised the familiar dialogues from the GCSE exam. It was fantastic!

Mrs. N. Hotchen, St. Edward’s School, Cheltenham

Summary of comments by Spanish students

The play I like very, very much because it is very funny. If I give a mark from 1 to 10, I will give mark 9 because is the best play in English that I see.

Raquel de la Fuente Almazán. 9 points.

It was really great! In my opinion the best of the play is the character of the monster. It’s very funny and it made me have a good time at the play. He’s always doing funny things and also he’s happy with obvious things, that made me laugh a lot. I also liked this character because it’s more human than lots of people I know and he’s always surprised with everything, I think he’s surprised because he’s “discovering the world” The end of the play when he dies mad me very sad because I was starting to like him a lot.

Igor Cebrián Muiño. 10 points.

First of all I want to say that the performance was extraordinary. I didn’t know how in our comprehensive school it could take place a great play like Frankenstein. I liked a lot music, actors, lights, stage. When you went down of the stage it was really fantastic. Finally, when the police was killing the monster, shooting him we said: Oh! What a pity! Because we didn’t know the final after have read the script.

María Rodriguez Reina. 8 points.

I loved the play, because it was very funny, easy to understand and it was a heart touching story also. The end of the play I found very sad that the monster died in such a way.

Alba García Cardiel. 9 points.

Sincerely I will give this play an 8 or a 8.5 to this play, because it’s better than the other plays I have seen. The players works well and I really enjoyed with it. It really fantastic!

Eva Jiménez Pastor. 8 or 8.5 points.

I liked all the characters, scenes etc. I had a very great time, I didn’t like so much the end of the play. It was very strange and sad. I liked a lot of the play because I understood all things or most of things. The special effects there was great.

Patricia Ramos. 9 points.

My favourite part was when Melanie and the Monster meet for the first time and she tries to teach him some English words.

Inés Saz Code. 8 points.

I liked very much because the special efects and the decorates were very nice. The part that I liked most was when the monster wakes up because it was very exciting. I give a 8. Is the best play that has been made in the institute.

Carlos Antoñanzas. 8 points.

I mark the play for 7 because is more interesting for see this play, the characters were very good, but I don’t mark this play for 10 because I can’t understand all the words at this moment. I have to read the play in my house and look some words at the dictionary.

Adela Ariell Remón. 7 points.

At the end when he’s going to die it was very sad because you can imagine it easily. The ambientation of the play (the lights, the smoke) was very good, because you imagined you where also in that places.

Sabina Calvo. 9 points.

The best part of the play is in my opinion when the monster is created by Frankenstein because is very thrilling and very interesting.

Marta Huertas Manguindey. 9 points.

One of the most thing I liked were the special effects, especially the smog who gave an misterious environment. Also the monster played a really good role and if you can enter in this magic atmosphere that offered the play you will feel that the monster really acted, I mean you can think and believe that he was a real monster.

Nerea Irigoyen Vergara. 9 points.

The actors did their parts very good and I could hear them from the last row. The dialogue was simple because there aren’t a lot of difficult words but it was fast because it had short sentences. The best of the play was the monster and when melanie teached him to speak.

Eduardo Gil. 6 points.

I really liked it. The special effects were very good. The adaption was also good and sometimes very funny. The interpretation of all the actors was good. The most character I liked was the monster because he was so funny.

Elisa Miranda Camarero. 9 points.

I like. Every parts were the best for me.

Cristina Pérez. 9 points.

Which part did you like least? The least part was when the monster was killed by the two man. This part is very, very sad, and Melanie didn’t make nothing.

No name.

I loved the surprises.

Pilar Miranda Arte. 7.5 points.

They’re very good actors and I like very much the play. The funniest was the monster because when how learned to speak I laughed very much and I liked when he played with Melany. I like the play because I laughed very much but sometimes I frightened like when the monster comes alive. I like least the end because was very sad.

Violeta. 7 points.

I liked the play a lot and I wait for another as good as that one.

Alejandra Aliaga. 8 points.

The performance was in the institute. The characters were played by persons very preparing and the piece was fantastic. Some characters sang and danced. The best of the representation was the ambient. The ambient was genial, the frights, the smoke etc. the sound was very real. I give a mark 8.
